I was fortunate to have a week sailing amongst the islands in July of this year.
This collection of studies was my initial reactions to the the small isles of Skye , Rhum , Canna , Muck and Eigg from my time on board the yacht Merlin .
Foremost we’re the colours , beautiful blues , a multitude of greys, rich browns and mustards. Secondly was the wind, , the breeze on my face, in the sails , the pull of the helm and the movement of the boat
Each day provided a wealth of inspiration, each day being different. Each island had its own characteristics and atmosphere.
Skye with the Cuillens and rushing waters was drama. Canna was lush , green, tropical with trees , Rhum , majestic and imposing , Eigg distinct with its Sgurr and Muck , a little oasis of calm in the roughening seas .
As we sheltered from stormy weather in Loch Moidart there was time to look and see the impact of this wild environment on the surroundings . Trees bent at tortuous angles, gnarled and clinging to bare rock, the rise and fall of the tides revealing and hiding in equal measures. Inspiration in abundance.
I hope you enjoy these studies and the main event over on the Small Isles page.
